First upgraded train set has arrived in Norway!
The first type 72 train set to be fully mid-life upgraded has now arrived in Norway.
After an extensive upgrade at Alstom in Sweden, the train arrived in Norway on 15 December. The train will now undergo a test period before being handed over to Vy for operation. Customers will notice a big difference in the trains after the upgrade.
- The 20-year-old train will now look brand new! It will give a big boost to both passengers and operators. The train will provide a more modern and comfortable travelling experience,’ says Kine Stousland, project manager for the mid-life upgrade at Norske tog.
The trains will operate as local trains in the Oslo area and on the Jæren Line. Passengers in eastern Norway will enjoy the first train set that has now been upgraded. The train will be operated by Vy, and it is they who will decide when the first passengers board. This will happen after the train has been tested and an official handover takes place from Alstom.
- ‘This is the first of a total of 36 trains to be upgraded. We are already in the process of upgrading the second train, which will run on the Jæren Line and be operated by GoAhead,’ says Stousland.
Modern comfort for passengers
Major changes have been made to the trains. The interiors have a Scandinavian design with light oak and grey textiles.The trains will also have new floors, wall panelling, seat covers and doors. In addition, there will be new screens for passenger information and USB charging at each seat.
- Finally, you can charge your phone on the go in the Type 72! We know that USB chargers are important to our passengers, and we're happy to finally be able to offer this feature in the old trains,’ says Stousland.
In addition to the external upgrades, the carriage body is also being checked for damage, batteries are being replaced, all cables are being checked, traction converters and auxiliary power rectifiers are being overhauled, the doors are being electrified, the water tank and filter are being cleaned, passenger counters are being installed and security cameras are having data transferred to the landside.
